I know political reporters have jobs, and as soon as a bad jobs report comes out, it’s time to look at what it means for the President.
But there’s a group of people who haven’t been getting a whole lot of coverage — the actual unemployed.
Who’s the most unemployed? Teenagers. Construction workers. Minorities. (Black teenagers will face a 40 percent unemployment rate. Good luck with that summer job!) People without high school diplomas. (Full data here: PDF)
While Washington continues to fall into the Beltway deficit loop, America runs the risk of having a group of long-term unemployed who will not find jobs for years.
So high unemployment may be bad for Obama’s poll numbers, but it’s way worse for unemployed people — a group of Americans that the chattering classes finds it easier to ignore.
