General Patraeus has spoken out against a small Florida church that is planning to commemorate 9/11 by burning the Quran. The hateful actions of a small and unimportant group is something I usually try to ignore. But leaving aside the issue of how Patraeus’ warning is rooted in concern for violence against US troops, and the wisdom of them going ahead full speed with their plans anyway, something else struck me. This is how these people commemorate 9/11. Now, I don’t do anything special to commemorate the day myself, but instead of burning the Quran, I thought I would head over the the New Yorker archive page of past cover art. There have been plenty of amazing covers in the magazine’s history (obligatory shout-out), but some of their 9/11 anniversary covers stand out.

Thank you. Burning the Quran will just exacerbate the problem. Hatred breeds hatred, it is shameful to see what the world has come to.
I think the best was clearly the one immediately after 9/11 by Art Spiegelman: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/db/Spiegelman-cover.jpg
When holding the magazine originally, it was difficult to tell there was a design at all. You kind of had to hold it the right way to see the image of the towers.
Ah, thanks for the link. I actually left that one out because at the New Yorker site, the image they have for that one truly just looks like a blank black page.

The only thing you can really see is the antenna piercing the “W” in “New.”
thanks for this post. it truly is a scary world we live in.
